I grew up in a small town called Kaikohe in the Far North. Home of the Brave. I was raised alongside 1 of my five siblings by my grandparents and have an old school way of doing life, coming from humble beginnings.
I grew up “off the grid” with no running hot water, no power and spent much of my childhood on the farm with my koro and kui learning their way of life and what our taiao has to offer in terms of native living.
My passions and interest include all things outdoors, adventure and tikanga Māori, being raised by my Nan exposed me to my Māori roots and it’s a way of life that resonated with me and so I found myself out in the gardens harvesting kai Māori as if it were something every kid my age was doing, doing it willingly because I just knew I was for the betterment of the whānau, which was one of the many values instilled into us at a young age without us even knowing.
Tuna, watercress, kānga pirau, tiiiti and freshly baked breads was a staple diet. Learning how to prepare tuna, ika, wild pork and feasts that would feed the masses from a young age allowed us to learn very quickly, these teachings made it very easy for me to find a role to fill at kaupapa with my partners very proud Ngāti Koroki Kahukura whānau, who have taught me a lot in the past 11 years.
Ngāti Koroki Kahukura/MDLP has provided opportunities to employ and educate whānau in the Taiao space. My Role within the Iwi is to work alongside the Taiao team regenerating and restoring Taonga and Mahinga kai habitats across iwi whenua and establishing education pathways that lead to future employment opportunities for the iwi and community, led through the establishment of The Tupu Panuku Native Nursery and Rongoa Dispensary. To be able to work in an environment with like-minded people is a privilege and I take this as an opportunity to give back to the whenua that has provided for me my whole life.
The taiao mahi along with the education pathways established by Ngāti Koroki Kahukura in partnership with WINTEC gives me ideas on how to achieve my own personal goal, which is to, in about 7 years take these learnings, initiatives and ideas to create learning and employment opportunities for my own Iwi in the north, which is in desperate need of something positive like this.
Mauri ora!
